Bright Spark Scholars Program

About the Program

Bright Spark Scholars is a new tutoring program coming Fall 2024! This program is a partnership with the UC Merced Community Engagement Center and Weaver School District. During the pilot year (2024-2025), UCM Bright Spark Scholars Tutors will working with K-3 students at Farmdale Elementary School on literacy. Research shows that literacy is a key component and tool for learning in any subject area for the entirety of someone’s life! UCM tutors will receive transportation to Farmdale Elementary School for the in-person tutoring and will be expected to tutor about 6 -8 hours a week during the semester. 15 UC Merced students will be accepted to the program and will receive a $1,000 stipend after completing 50 hours of service during the semester.  To complete the 50 hours, students will need to be available for three days per week during the following times: 

- Monday 2:30 - 4:30

- Tuesday 2:30 - 4:30

- Wednesday 1:15 - 3:15

- Thursday 2:30 - 4:30

- Friday 2:30 - 4:30

Become a UCM Bright Spark Scholars Tutor 

All UCM students are welcome to apply – including AB 540 eligible students! The UCM Bright Sparks Scholars Tutors are required to attend an info session, submit their application (only students who attend an info session will receive access to the application), and receive training on Book Buddies, a phonetics training program. UCM Bright Spark Scholars Tutors will complete two semesters in the program (and receive $1,000 per semester). 

By participating in the Bright Spark Scholars program, you will be eligible for our Community Service Graduation Pin! Full participation must be completed for the Community Service Graduation Pin, which is a semester-long commitment.
