UC Sprouts

The vision of the UC Sprouts program is to provide quality supplemental STEM education to elementary students in the Merced community by developing and executing a curriculum that will allow them to plant and tend to an edible garden; they will learn about plant development, nutritious eating, the importance of recycling and composting, along the way, they will learn about going to college from UC Merced Sprouts mentors.

UCM Sprouts mentors must demonstrate an interest and passion for working with youth from disadvantaged communities, be familiar with basic gardening and biology principles, and be committed to making time for the program in addition to leadership, patience and compassion. Mentors will complete training that will teach best practices when working with children,  lesson plans, and how to maintain the garden in the weeks the students will not be visiting. Sprouts mentors will also participate in team building exercises to develop a positive team rapport.

Time Commitment
Following training, mentors will need to be available on average, 5-8 hours a month.

Transportation and ongoing support will be provided
