A semester-long experience in which students will learn the basics of applying effective literacy interventions for K-3 grade students who have demonstrated a delay. This intervention supplements and assists classroom teachers in building literacy among struggling K-3rd grade students, helping them to achieve grade-level expectations in reading by the completion of 3rd grade. UC Merced students will partner with struggling readers, meeting one-on-one with the same child two times a week throughout the semester for 1 hour and 15 minutes each session. The experience includes mandatory 4-hours of orientation in literacy intervention using Book Buddies (Johnston, Invernizzi, Juel & Lewis-Wagner, 2009) training material, and basic tutoring skills, and requires an initial, intermediate, and final reflection paper along with weekly assignments to be submitted with the final presentation and reflection.
The Literacy Intervention experience meets the requirements of Badge #11, Leadership, Community, and Engaging the World, by giving students practical one-on-one tutoring experience with a kindergarten, first, second or third grade student in a local elementary school who is struggling to read at grade level. The training the UCM students will recieve will allow them to identify basic reading disorders and provide them with appropriate, practical interventions to target specific weaknesses (GE PLO 5).
