Bright Spark Scholars Program

About the Program

The Bright Spark Scholars is a new tutoring program that began Fall 2024! This program is a partnership with the UC Merced Community Engagement Center and Weaver School District. During the pilot year (2024-2025), UCM Bright Spark Scholars Tutors worked with K-3 students at Farmdale Elementary School on literacy. Around 13 UCM tutors received training as well as transportation to Farmdale Elementary School for the in-person tutoring.  They averaged about 6 -8 hours a week of tutoring during the semester.

During Fall 2025 - Spring 2026, 30 UC Merced students will be accepted to the program and will receive a $1,000 stipend after completing 60 hours of service during the semester.

Become a UCM Bright Spark Scholars Tutor

All UCM students are welcome to apply – including AB 540 eligible students! The UCM Bright Sparks Scholars Tutors are required to attend an info session, submit their application (only students who attend an info session will receive access to the application), and receive training. UCM Bright Spark Scholars Tutors will complete two semesters in the program (and have the opportunity to receive $1,000 per semester).

By participating in the Bright Spark Scholars program, you will be eligible for our Community Service Graduation Pin! Full participation is required for the Community Service Graduation Pin eligibility, which is a semester-long commitment.
