A semester-long experience in which students will learn basic tutoring strategies and interventions to apply in support of k-12 students seeking help to learn concepts and complete school-related assignments. Tutoring support supplements and assists students in developing understanding and gaining confidence, helping them to achieve grade-level expectations. Tutors will also learn about social, emotional and economic factors that play a role in the achievement of educational success.
UC Merced students will partner with local agencies who provide after-school opportunities for K-12 grade students. The experience includes mandatory orientation in tutoring strategies, interventions and social factors, requires initial, intermediate, and final reflections in addition to weekly assignments to be submitted prior to making a Final presentation.
The B.E.S.T. experience meets the requirements of Badge #11, Leadership, Community, and Engaging the World by giving students practical one-on-one and small group tutoring experience with kindergarten through 12th grade students facing academic challenges, in a local program, agency or school. The orientation the UCM students receive will allow them to provide basic tutoring skills and interventions to support students in their ability to complete school assignments (GE PLO 5)
