MLK Day Of Service

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday marked as a NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE - meant to be a day to volunteer in the improvement of our communities. This year MLK Day falls on Monday, January 15, 2024. To honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, the Community Engagement Center has partnered with the Office of Social Justice and Identity Programs to directly serve our local communites by providing UC Merced students, staff & faculty with on and off campus opportunities.

10 AM - 3 PM | Painting Flattened Oak Leaves for Yosemite National Park and Creating Cards of Encouragement (For womxn impacted by the justice system) | MultiCultural Center (KL 169)

Noon - 1 PM | MLK Day Reflection and Guest Speakers (pausing from the on-campus service projects for a reflection on service and social justice) | MultiCultural Center (KL 169)

5 - 7:30 PM | D Street Shelter Dinner | 317 E 15th St. Merced, CA 95341

  • Painting Flattened Oak Leaves

    Interested in environmental stewardship? We are partnering with Yosemite National Park (YNP) to paint flattened oak tree leaves which will be displayed at the park to welcome visitors. Your help will be needed, but spots are limited so we encourage you to sign up soon!

  • Cards of Encouragements

    Help spread kindness by creating cards of encouragement for womxn impacted by the justice system. The Community Engagement Center is partnering up with a local women's prison and the Office of Social Justice & Identity Programs to write positive messages for each of the 2,220 individuals currently in the local prison.   • D St. Shelter Dinner

    Volunteers will have the opportunity to cook a hot meal for our friends currently housed at the D Street Shelter. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community and to directly impact those in need. Spots are limited for this opportunity, so please register your interest as soon as you can! Registration is coming soon!

  • You are invited to join us for a moment of reflection and to hear from our guest speakers about the importance of service in relation to MLK Day. The reflection is happening between service projects at the UC Merced MultiCultural Center (Kl 169) from Noon - 1 PM. Snacks will be provided.
