Students will lead a semester-long garden-based experience for 3rd and 4th grade students providing supplemental STEM education using age-appropriate, Extension-Based curriculum focused on the plant life-cycle, gardening, healthy eating, and concepts of sustainability. This project supplements the third and fourth grade focus on Farm-to-Table and aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). UC Merced students will facilitate small groups of elementary children working in and learning from their on-site school garden 1-2 times a week for an hour each time. This Experience begins with a mandatory 5-hour orientation to introduce students to the curriculum and strategies for hands-on teaching, discussion, and activity facilitation.
Participation in this experience will allow students to complete the Leadership, Community, and Engaging the World Badge #11 (GE PLO 5) as they teach and engage with elementary school children, their teachers, and families around concepts of gardening and food literacy.
